On May 12, 2023 at 7:00pm, the Vermont Marble Museum (VMM) and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra (VSO) invite you to Men, Marble, and Machines at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland. Tickets are available online and at the Paramount Theatre Box Office.   https://www.paramountvt.org/event/vso-men-marble-machines-film/  VSO and VMM co-host this event in honor of VSO past board chairs, and VMM emeriti board co-chairs, Robert and Victoria Young

The evening will feature the 1984, award winning documentary film, Men, Marble and Machines, and a 21-piece VSO Chamber Orchestra under the direction of conductor, Matt LaRocca, performing works by composer Nicholas Scarim, who wrote the award-winning score for Men, Marble and Machines.

This is the first time that Men, Marble and Machines has been shown on screen since the 1980s.  It is an industry documentary, and more; it is an artful study of the beauty of marble, the technological process and workmanship that transform Vermont marble into landmark structures, national monuments, and tactile art. The film follows marble from deep inside the vast underground Danby quarry to the Vermont Marble Company’s finishing mill in Proctor, where cranes, gang saws, machines and marble workers cut, form, polish and carve. The striking cinematography and evocative score guide the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the process, as well as to understand and appreciate the skills of the Vermonters who work with marble.

The score itself, by composer Nicholas Scarim, celebrates the grandeur of the industry that built the entire Rutland region.  The composition brings sound to the physical elements of stone, water, sand and air as machines lift, saw, plane, form and polish the stone.

The all-Scarim program includes Vermont Suite, Seasons, and Casey at the Bat, featuring 20-time Vermont Sportscaster of the Year and longtime WSYB talk show host and play-by-play announcer, Jack Healey.

Following the event, join members of the VMM Board for a finale reception and say hello to Jack Healey, Ken Resnick, Producer of Men, Marble and Machines; Arthur Bemis, Executive Producer; Nicholas Scarim, Composer; Matt LaRocca, VSO Camber Orchestra Conductor, and Musicians.

Tickets are $19.34 in commemoration of the year (1934) that Vermont Marble Company opened the Vermont Marble Exhibit in Proctor, what today is the Vermont Marble Museum.

Come celebrate with us the beauty of marble and the stone industry that shaped Vermont’s marble valley.
